Discounts and coupons

A discount on the whole sale, as a percentage or an amount, or a coupon with validity dates and a usage cap. It applies before tax, is spread across the lines, and carries through unchanged to the invoice and the tax document.

A discount that adds up on every document

A discount looks like a subtraction, but on a sale with several tax rates, withholdings and a tax document behind it, a badly allocated discount throws off the total. Cord computes it with the same engine as the rest of the sale: it applies before tax, is spread across the lines in proportion to their amount, and the per-line amounts add up exactly to the discount.

What's included

  • Document discount: a percentage or an amount in the sale currency. An amount never exceeds the gross total, and with tax-inclusive prices it reduces what the customer pays.
  • Your own coupons: your own code, validity dates in your business's time zone, a required currency when the coupon is an amount, and a usage cap overall and per customer. Manage them in Settings › Discounts › Coupons.
  • Usage counts when it commits: a coupon is redeemed when the quote is approved or the invoice is issued, not when it's typed. If no uses are left, the quote is not approved and the invoice is not issued, and the history says so. Rejecting the quote, voiding the invoice or deleting the draft releases the use.
  • All the way to the tax document: the PDF shows each line's gross amount and a discount row with its code. In Mexico each CFDI line carries its share of the discount, in Spain the record declares the discounted base, and a credit note prorates it.
  • Withholdings on the right base: they are computed on the discounted bases.
  • Consistent approvals: a manual discount counts toward discount approval flows; a coupon, already authorized by the business, does not.
  • Through the API and on your site: the API accepts a discount or a coupon code, and the coupon is the only discount a publishable key can apply, so your embedded quote builder can offer it.

Clear limits

A coupon already applied stays when the document is edited, even if it later expires. Code, type, value and currency can't be edited: a used coupon is deactivated, not deleted. A recurring invoice carries only a manual discount.

How it works

  1. Create the coupon in Settings › Discounts › Coupons or enter the discount in the editor.

  2. Cord checks validity, currency and uses, and spreads the discount across the lines before tax.

  3. When the quote is approved or the invoice is issued, the use is recorded; rejecting, voiding or deleting the draft releases it.

Availability and scope

Quotes and invoices in all 12 markets, from the editor, the API and the embedded quote builder. The discount reaches the PDF, the public link and each country's tax document.

Clear limits

The document discount applies to the whole sale; each line's negotiated price stays its price. A used coupon can't be rewritten and a recurrence carries no coupons. A line the discount brings to zero can't go on a CFDI and is rejected before stamping.
