Mercado Pago
Your client pays from the same quote link and the money lands in your Mercado Pago account.
When it applies
Mercado Pago is a second online payment rail, next to Cord Payments. Its role depends on your account’s country:
| Country | Cord Payments | Mercado Pago |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico | Available, the main rail | Alternative on the same payment page |
| Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, and Peru | Not available | The way to collect online |
| Other Cord countries | Depends on the country | Not offered |
Cord offers Mercado Pago to accounts in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, and Peru. In all of them you get paid with your own account, and the payment methods, currency, and fees are the ones Mercado Pago has enabled for your account in your country. End-to-end payment has been verified in Mexico; in the other countries, before sharing the link with your clients, make a test payment for a small amount (see the FAQ) and contact us if something doesn’t work as you expect.
Connect your account
- Open Settings › Payments › Payment methods. Only the organization owner can connect Mercado Pago: the rest of the team sees the row without the buttons. In Colombia, Argentina, Chile, and Peru, Settings › Payments › Account brings you here with the Connect Mercado Pago button.
- Under Other processors, on the Mercado Pago row, click Connect Mercado Pago and confirm your identity when Cord asks.
- Sign in to Mercado Pago with the account that will receive the money and authorize Cord.
- You return to Payment methods and the row says Connected. Mercado Pago is added to the Your client will see line.
When an account other than the previous one is connected, Cord emails the owner and the admins with the connected account, who did it and from which IP. The owner’s email includes the It wasn’t me link: for 72 hours it disconnects that account and signs out the sessions that were open with the owner’s account.
Use a business account in your company’s name: it is the seller shown at checkout and the one that receives each payment.
Cord stores that access encrypted and renews it on its own. It only uses it to open the payment for your quotes and to read whether it was paid. If Mercado Pago stops accepting the renewal, for example because you removed the authorization from your account, the row asks you to connect again and Mercado Pago is no longer offered to your clients until you do.
To disconnect, click Disconnect on the same row and confirm your identity. Open payments can no longer be paid with Mercado Pago; paid ones keep their history.
What your client sees
On the quote’s payment page and on the invoice’s public link:
- If Mercado Pago is your only rail, they see a blue Pay with Mercado Pago button with the Mercado Pago logo.
- If you also have Cord Payments, they first see the Cord Payments form and, below a divider, the Pay with Mercado Pago button.
Clicking it opens Mercado Pago’s checkout, where they pay with the methods Mercado Pago offers in their country. Once the payment is approved, they return to your link.
If the quote has a deposit and balance, installments or a milestone plan, each part is collected separately, and the quote is paid once no balance remains. Mercado Pago only collects the part that’s due today, on your business’s calendar day: never one before its date, a milestone waiting for you to mark it as completed, or a part below its currency’s minimum charge. On an invoice they can pay part of it: click “Pay another amount”, type how much, and Cord caps it at the real balance.
How payments are confirmed
- Mercado Pago notifies Cord that there was a payment. The notice arrives signed, and Cord rejects any notice whose signature does not match.
- Cord reads the payment in Mercado Pago with your account’s access. It never treats a payment as done based on the notice alone.
- Only an approved payment marks the charge as paid. A payment that stays pending, such as cash, is marked paid when Mercado Pago approves it.
- Mercado Pago resends its notices by design. A repeated notice does not record the payment twice.
If the same charge ends up paid through both Cord Payments and Mercado Pago, Cord notes it in the quote history so you can decide whether to refund one.
Refunds
An invoice payment collected with Mercado Pago is refunded from Cord, fully or partially: on the invoice detail page, the Refund button next to the payment (see Refunding an invoice payment). Cord requests it from Mercado Pago through your account’s connection, so the money leaves your Mercado Pago account, just as it came in. A quote payment is refunded from your Mercado Pago account.
In both cases, and also if you refund an invoice from Mercado Pago, Cord reads the refund: once Mercado Pago confirms the money went out, it lowers the paid amount, reopens the balance, and records it in the document’s history. If the quote had already been invoiced, refunding its payment also reopens the invoice. A refund Mercado Pago has not confirmed yet does not touch the balance.
Chargebacks and mediations
If your client opens a mediation in Mercado Pago or their bank starts a chargeback, Cord reads it: while the money is held or out of your account, the invoice goes back to collections and Cord adds a task to answer the case from your Mercado Pago account, with the deadline once Mercado Pago reports it. If it’s resolved in your favor, the invoice is paid again. The case doesn’t appear in the Open disputes widget of Payments: the documentation is sent from Mercado Pago. See Disputes and chargebacks.
What it does not do yet
| Case | Today |
|---|---|
| Recurring retainers | Not offered: a retainer needs the Cord Payments subscription. |
| Scheduled charges | Mercado Pago charges when your client opens the link; it does not store their card to charge later. |
FAQ
Does Cord charge with my account or Cord’s? Yours. The money never goes through Cord.
What fee does Mercado Pago charge? Your account’s fee, under the terms you have with Mercado Pago. It is deducted from each payment.
Can I test without charging for real? Create a quote for a small amount, pay it from another browser without a session using a card that is not from the same Mercado Pago account (Mercado Pago does not let you pay yourself), and refund it afterwards from Mercado Pago.
